  • What skills do I have?
  • What were the events that affected and influenced my goals?
  • Were there any obstacles that I had to overcome?
  • How did I deal with these difficulties?
  • What separates me from the rest? How am I unique?
  • Who have influenced me over the years and how did they influence me?
  • What makes me interesting to the admissions committee?
  • How have I grown over the years? What caused these changes and how did these affect me?
  • What are my career goals?

Questions about your field of study:

  • What interested me?
  • Why am I interested in this field?
  • What did learn about my subject of interest?
  • How did this influence me?
  • What did this teach me about myself?

Questions about your non-academic experiences:

  • What were my past jobs/internships?
  • What did I learn from these?
  • What skills did I acquire?
  • How did my job experience relate to my field of interest?
  • How did this prepare me for my future career?
  • What social services did I participate in? How has the experience contributed to my growth?
  • How is it related to my goals?
  • What extracurricular activities did I join and why?
  • How did these influence my professional goals?

Questions about the readers and institution:

  • Who will be reading my personal statement?
  • How can I make my essay compelling to the readers?
  • What can this program expect from me?

Questions about your academic record:

  • What are the awards, recognitions, or honors did receive that are worth mentioning?
  • Do I have any gaps in my transcript and/or exam scores that I need to explain?

Write to show you are worth the admissions officers’ approval.  Do not summarize the events, narrate it but be direct. Be original.  In this kind of writing, show your analytical mind.
Your write-up will influence your college acceptance or rejection. So write an article that will appeal to the admissions committee. Evaluation of these questions can help in the preparation of making a compelling and persuasive article.
