Selecting term paper subject is the most difficult part of writing an assignment. If your tutor has already given you a topic then lots of your time and energy gets saved. But if you have to choose a subject on your own then instead of spending half the time in wondering which would be the best topic for your assignment, try to solve this problem in a more practical way. There should always be a purpose of the topic you are going to write on. Try to recognize the purpose of your work. Never say that you are writing because it is a part of your course. Think about the larger picture. Think who could be the target audience of your work. Think about any message or information that you have to pass towards them. You would come cross many ideas this way.
Alternatively you can choose a topic by going through the text that you are following in your course. There might be some part of the text, which would interest you more than the rest of the text. Read that part thoroughly. Try to find whether there is anything more that you would like to know as far as that part of the text is concerned. Do you feel that any one point should have been elaborated more? Try to form a question related to that part of the text. The answer to that question would be the topic of your essay.
Try not to choose a topic that is very general in nature. If this is the case then the paper looks hardly interesting to the reader. Take some time; think about a fresh angle to a particular aspect. A little bit of brainstorming would give you results about which you have never thought of before. Suppose you have been asked to write something on sports. Try to break that issue into several parts. Instead of writing on a general topic like cricket or hockey, take a fresh angle. You can write on which sports is most popular in your country? What is the reason behind it? You can write on how television has impacted the growth of different kinds of sports or why is a particular sports more famous than the other. What can be done to make women sports more popular? Choose an angle whose answer is unknown to you. Researching and writing about it would be more interesting to you than researching and writing on a general topic like ‘my favorite sports'.
Similarly if you have been asked to write on a social issue. Don't choose a topic that would be easier for you to research. If all the information is easily accessible to you, then that means that it has been discussed by others for umpteenth times. Do you think such a topic would interest the reader? Instead of writing on ‘animal cruelty' write on what is the most disgusting form of cruelty imposed on animals or how can different kinds of media work together to control this menace.
Term paper subjects are not anywhere else but within you. Just try to discover them by talking to your inner self.
