Music term paper writing is not as easy as listening to music. It is quite different from writing in any other subject. You might be asked to write about the history of an instrument, an analysis of a specific composition, comparative analysis of the works of two composers belonging to the same era or different eras, profile of a composer etc. No matter what the topic is it can always be categorised in two classes - reviews and research findings.
In comparison to research findings reviews are much shorter. Through this kind of work you are expected to present your own viewpoints regarding a performance of an artist. Your attempt should be to present an unbiased analysis of the artist's performance, irrespective of who he / she is. Try to focus on the form that has been adopted, how that particular composition composed or delivered, what fusions have been made, are those fusions powerful enough to present an everlasting effect etc. The length of the reviews varies from two to four pages. For writing a review you will always have to listen to a performance. If you are a part of a live audience you would find that all the listeners have their own opinions. Don't get carried away by other's opinion. Present your own honest reactions and then of course present an analysis of the composition by interpreting it and supporting your interpretation with evidence.
Research writing means that you would be asked to research about a particular topic and draw a conclusion based on the gathered facts. These assignments are longer than the reviews. In fact there is no limit to the number of pages. It can vary from five to twenty pages depending upon the topic. Always try to present the information in a simple language. If you are using a technical term, try to explain it.
To be able to do this kind of assignment you should not only have a natural inclination towards this subject but also the knowledge of how to write in this subject. You cannot learn the nuances of this kind of writing by just theoretical advise. You will have to first form a habit of reading works of experts and reviews that are published in the popular newspapers and magazines. Go through as many examples as possible in the form of writings done by experts as nothing can guide you better.
While researching for your topic you would not get enough help from the Internet, as is the case with writing assignments for other subjects. You will have to go to specialized libraries to be able to gather updated and relevant information. If this is the field that interests you then these visits might look more interesting to you than searching the web.
Music term paper should always be written under the proper guidance of your tutor. Speak to him about the progress of your work as often as you can so that you are able to know what his expectations are and are able to mould your assignments accordingly.
