Well the review guy makes some good points, but did anyone ever think of the ethical part of this? Of course, you can be a freelance journalist and write articles for many different magazine both on and offline, however there are some companies, whose work is very far from ethical.
So a good hint for those of you, who are looking for the employment online - do your homework first! Just take several minutes (if this is not enough take more time) and decide what job exactly are you looking for, while saying decide I mean you have to be sure about certain things - what exactly do you want to write about? how much would you like to get paid for your work? etc.
Once you have the list of your requirements make another list, with your strong points and see whether the skill that you have to offer matches your requirements for the job. If it does not, than you most likely you are a poor professional who is over estimating his own powers. And as most of the companies, who are looking for freelancers require professionalism from their employees, you most likely will be kicked out within first two weeks.
Also you have to keep in mind, that not all of the employers are fair to their employees, so you may simply get into the trap were you will write for the company and then you will not receive any compensation. How to avoid this? Well, first of all - research your future employer, but be warned not to trust everything that you read on the web, as many freelance writers, simply go and post nasty things about fully legitimate companies, who are doing their work properly. Why do they do this? The answer is obvious! Most of these people (writers) do not do their work properly and once they receive fines (this is another popular punishment for low quality work that freelance companies apply to their employees), they think that if they will start posting rubbish in the Internet they will be able to influence their past employers decision.
So the point that I am trying to make is following: "Think twice before starting your career on the Internet. Make sure that this is exactly what you want and only after you are 100% sure about your decision apply for a job, and once accepted make sure to give every order that you receive your 100% best, as this is the key to success!"

I do a number of small online writing jobs, they don't provide me with a huge income but it's a nice bonus. I tend to keep the money in my PayPal account and just purchase things online with it, never transfere it to my bank account.

There are opportunities if you look for them. I can't praise enough blog writing it really is something that anyone can get into and it gives you freedom as a writer because you can write about what you want without anyone breathing down your neck or having to work to the stress of deadlines. Once you get your name known a lot of writing work will come your way.

WritingGeek, you make plenty of valid points there. There's no point in applying for jobs that are beyond your capabilities. All you're doing is wasting both time and energy. Not only yours, but the employers!

I always research companies before I work for them. I never just judge them by their own website either. Just as it's easy for disgruntled employees to badmouth a company, it's equally easy for the companies to paint an undeserved glowing picture of themselves.

At the end of the day, it's a judgment call. However if you don't take the time to do some research and end up getting taken for a ride, you have no one to blame but yourself.

Good post, WritingGeek. Smile

WG, alot of what you said makes alot of sense; there are just a couple of things I'm a little confused about...
When you are speaking of ethics, are you speaking about adult content, pornography, or some other genre? I would definitely agree that if you have scruples against such work, by all means, don't do it!
It is always the wise writer who knows their capabilities. Sitting down and making a list of pros and cons sounds a bit like wasted effort to me. If I get a job at Mc Donalds, am I to write a list of pros and cons about that job and my suitability per se? People who can no longer work in their earlier endeavours need jobs like this if they are to remain productive. New mothers, as stated, and many other peoples in all walks of life find internet writing a proud and profitable venture. I am proud to say that I write for the internet.

I agree with the person above that mentioned writer freedom. I prefer to blog or write for specific online companies because they allow me to write about anything I want.

Here are a few I know about:

Squidoo (make money off your lens ad revenue)
Helium
Constant-Content
Associated Content
eHow
Hubpages

With many of these, the income is passive, so you won't earn the second you write the article, but earnings will keep coming in each month.

I don't like websites like textbroker that make you write on a specific topic that you may not want to write about.

I've posted some short stories and essays to Associated Content, and have gotten some nice reviews as a result.

As for blogs, they're a great way to just write and voice your opinion that otherwise may not be heard, but it is not as easy to earn meaningful money from them. Promoting blogs to drive traffic is more difficult than people think, and often takes more time and effort than expected.

Not to say that it can't be done; people do make money off blogging; it just isn't the instant riches scheme people proclaim.

I blog. I run a few blogs, actually, and only in the last year has there been enough consistent traffic for me to even consider the thought of adding something like AdSense and monetizing it. Since being laid off and have yet to find gainful employment, I'm certainly giving it considerable thought.

I think I'll check out some of the other online avenues people have mentioned.

I agree I've had 2 blogs for years and haven't made any significant money from them, they are great for posting your opinion and meeting like minded people but don't expect to make your fortune from it. There are millions of blogs out there now with more being created every day so the competition is tough and people are spoilt for choice when it comes to which blog they will read, the chances they will pick yours is millions to one these days and it takes a lot of hard work to change that.

I've signed up for ODesk, which matches people with writing (and other) jobs, with most jobs offering an hourly rate. ODesk has a set of tests people take, and they need to take an ODesk "ready" test; but there appears to be quite a bit of work there. The competition may be high for writing, though.

Last year I started to write for Helium, separate from any writing on assignment I was doing. I just didn't like what was on television and thought I'd like to write for my own enjoyment. I've actually picked up several hundred dollars from them over the year - not much, but not bad for a hobby either.

Besides, once you've written the stuff you can still post it elsewhere (as long as someone knows it's not an exclusive rights type of thing).

Did anyone get to hear about Triond? I'm with Triond.com that pays to write online but depends on the traffic too. I have been paid almost 4 times till date and more over it is free to join.
