Comparison and contrast essays are written with analysis of two or more like works, theories, products or services in mind. They are meant to provide a more thorough evaluation into the similarities and differences. They may also show how to items are related or categorized similarly, based on specific characteristics.
Differences may also be discussed to analyze special features, styles or details that distinguish a product, service or literary work. There are no specific formats for such papers, though they should follow a basic structure that all research papers adhere to. Analysis that provides insight into similarities or differences requires in depth research and information gathering. Such information serves as evidence to back up claims the writer is making or suggesting. Therefore, sources must be reputable and scholarly. Information should come from those who are considered experts or respected researchers in their chosen specialty. Sources should provide information and examples that are relevant to the subject.
Discussion topics for such research papers are endless. Literary works from the same era with different authors are often analyzed. Theories can be labeled into one specific type or group. Methods and practices are also labeled in this way. Market research often looks at various models of the same product, to provide objective consumer reports. When more than one item or piece of work is discussed, applicable terminology related to subject matter of the paper should be learned and used correctly. Product evaluation information can come from consumer reports and consumer research. Often technical product journals provide information on consumer safety, pricing and reliability. Regardless of subject matter, papers must begin with an introduction which contains the thesis statement or main concept that will be discussed. The introduction is usually one or two paragraphs, depending on how detailed the discussion becomes. Points of discussion are provided in the body, with new ideas beginning in new paragraphs. Paragraphs should flow from one to another with the use of transition statements or sentences. The ending or conclusion of the paper will summarize the main idea or ideas that were analyzed. All sources should be properly cited in the text and on the reference page, using the required style.
Comparison and contrast essays can provide us with quite a bit of information that is useful in decision making. Such papers can provide consumers with little known product information they may find useful. Such research can assist with marketing and product development decisions or with purchasing recommendations. They should contain unbiased information, resisting the temptation to show partiality toward one product or work. Most writers find this type of paper interesting and enjoyable to compose. At times, students face challenges with short deadlines, lack of research time or in organizing material.

As far as i know, comparison and contrast essays usually focus on two different subject. You have to prove how two things alike and different. Focus on basic information regarding your subject particularly on significant, interesting and similarities of the two. I agree on what the previous poster said that you should provide an information that will help readers in decision making.

Quote:
A Comparison or Contrast essay is an essay in which you either compare something or contrast something. A comparison essay is an essay in which you emphasize the similarities, and a contrast essay is an essay in which you emphasize the differences. We use comparison and contrast thinking when deciding which university to attend, which car to buy, or whether to drive a car or take a bus or an airplane to a vacation site.

Here is the comparison that ive found in the net hope it helps. well for me those two are somewhat similar for both in my opinion.

Comparison and contrast essays look at a subject in depth and compare it with another subject. You would be looking for running themes within the work. For example the subject might be compare person centred counselling with cognitive behavioural therapy counselling. Both of these are types of therapy which work in different ways. The writer would look in depth at the differences or similarities. Making links and comparisons within the body of the text. References would need to be made and a bibliography at the end. Usually the tutor would advise how many references need to be made, but it is usually good to show you have studied broadly. Writing these types of essays can be a real learning opportunity. Points should be clear and followed through with new idea's. At the end of the essay a conclusion is written.

There's not much else I can add to this that the others haven't given you. The main thing with a contrast and comparison essay is the research. The more research you do on your subject matter the better your essay will be.

That's a great explanation of this style. Unfortunately I've had to write more than my share of compare and contrast essays even though I'm not a big fan of the style in general. Thanks for the run-down though!

That is a good summary, Mickie31.

I haven't had to write a compare/contrast essay since high school!

For me, compare and contrast essays are often associate with a literary work in with poetry, comparing and contrasting a particular theme or literary device, and whether or not it works. Also useful in movie and book reviews.

Compare/contrast essays are not always the easiest ones to write, but they can be interesting and informative.
