Analysis essays are meant to critique a specific theory, writing, report, article or other piece of work. Evaluation of data, writing style, literary value, theory or point of view can be provided. A specific point of view can be taken, although it should be reinforced with research data or information from an academic source. All sources for the topic that is to be critiqued should possess extensive knowledge of the subject matter.
Views in opposition of that which is presented should also be investigated so the writer knows what points to argue or discuss. Arguments or critiques should be discussed in a logical, straightforward manner, free of emotion and ambiguity. The first paragraph should provide a description of the work or theory that is discussed, so readers know what is to be evaluated. Main points of discussion that the writer plans to cover in the paper should also be mentioned in the introduction.
For evaluation of literary works or those of artistic merit, such as plays, film, music and poetry, the writer should possess some background knowledge. With little background, however, the writer should find excellent sources that are knowledgeable about specific art forms. For scientific or psychological theories, any argument or disagreement with a particular idea should be reinforced with information from well accepted opposing views in the same subject. Writers should avoid using sources that are considered extremely controversial, as this often reduces the credibility of the paper. More in-depth discussion of the main points should follow the introduction in a logical manner that is easy for readers to follow. Transitional sentences should be used from one paragraph to the next.
While evaluation should contain critical thought and explanation, it should also includewWell thought out examples to discuss main points. It may also include comparing the work or theory to others in the same field, where applicable. It is very difficult to compare literary works of different authors from the same era. This is due to variations in style and form. The differences should be brought to the reader’s attention so they can be taken into consideration. It is often easier to compare different works from the same author or producer. Styles and methods should be discussed in terms of how applicable they are to the specific work, or how well they work getting the message across.
Analysis essay writing allows some room for creativity in thought, as long as information or thoughts are discussed in a logical manner. |
