Definition Essay

Writing a definition essay is about more than giving a definition to terms or words, but rather it involves a thorough study as to how the word received its meaning in the first place. The objective of the definition essay is to give your reader an idea of how the words being defined developed their meaning over time. Such essays are a form of academic writing. As it is, you will need to review the basic principles of academic writing before you start working on your essay. Always keep in mind that each form of academic writing has a distinctive style, so you need to review the characteristics of them to come up with a good final product.  

Steps In Writing A Definition Essay
Writing a definition essay involves at least three major steps. First, you need to tell your readers what term or word you are going to define in your essay. Second, you need to present some basic information as to how you are going to define the term in your essay. That is to say, you need to establish some kind of methodology. At this point, you may also want to give your readers a background on the origin of the word that you are defining. The third step is to refer to some good essay examples, facts, stories and anecdotes that will help the readers understand what the term is all about.

Getting Started
Before you attempt to write you need to choose a word or term that you want to define and research its origins. Always remember that in academic writing you need to learn more about something before you attempt to write about it. Thus, your research on the term should be thorough enough that you understand its meanings and history. Bear in mind, as well, that you cannot give that which you already do not have, i.e. knowledge. Attempting to write a definition essay on a term that you do not really know much about will only result in embarrassment on your part. If you are submitting your essay to your college professor for grading purposes, you will probably get a very poor grade if your essay does not meet the standards of good academic writing. A definition essay may seem simple, but it requires much effort from you.

Making A Thesis
In a definition essay, you need to state the term that you want to define in the form of a thesis within which you will also provide your working definition for the term in question. For instance, if you want to define the term "honesty" in your essay, you may state your thesis as follows: "Honesty is about telling the truth no matter what consequences it may entail." From your thesis, you can expound the topic of your reserch paper by using examples, anecdotes and stories. Since this an academic paper, you need to support your claims with evidence. Use the works of known authors to lend credibility.

When defining a term in your essay, you may include a definition of what the term is not. By giving the readers of your essay an idea of the things that cannot be attributed to the term that you are defining, they will have a better understanding of what you are trying to say in your definition essay.
