Twelve Tips to Admission Essays That Get Results
All else being equal, it is the admission essays that will make the difference between acceptance or rejection to a college or university. There is plenty of material available on how to write an essay that will tip the balance in your favor and you could use any of it to hone your application paper writing skills. Alternatively, you could use the following more simplistic tips to develop a better application paper. If you prepare yourself sufficiently you can take on this seemingly difficult task quite easily.
1. Make your essay compelling. If your essay is to stand out in the crowd of essays that an admissions officer has to go through, then it has to be different. Use your creativity and keep the interest going right through to the end of paper.
2. Your paper should be easy to read. Admissions officers are busy people, so do not force them to use a dictionary to try and understand what you have written. Try not to use words that are more than seven characters long. This is not always possible, but when there is a smaller, simpler word available, use it and avoid ones that are not used in daily speech.
3. Talk about yourself. The admissions officer wants to know more about you, so let the essay reveal your character and your personality. But be subtle while doing this. You should not be saying, for example, what an altruistic person you are. The reader should be able to determine certain things about you based on an experience that you discuss in the essay.
4. Do not use jargon. The use of slang can be quite unappropriate and unsuitable.
5. Always write in the active voice. You could use passive voice verbs where completely necessary. But, keep in mind that uninhibited use of passive voice verbs could make your admissions paper dull.
6. Critically review what you have written. It would be a good idea to ask others to read your essay and tell them in advance what they should look for in the paper and what should come out easily and clearly.
7. Try and keep the essay to the required length. Remember that admissions officers have to go through lots of other essays, so they will not have the time to go through an endless dissertation. Admissions officers do not want to read through a sheaf of literature before your personality comes through.
8. Draft and redraft. Go through your paper as many times as is required. While revising, focus not just on simplicity and brevity of sentences, also focus of paragraph and sentence constructions. Make sure there is coherence between the paragraphs.
9. End your essay with a strong conclusion. If it is not an effective summary of all that you have said before, rewrite it until it reads like something that will make an outstanding and positive impression on the reader.
10. There are hundreds of excellent admissions treatises. Go through a few to familiarize yourself with what makes an exceptional essay.
Writing effectively comes naturally to only a very few. Others acquire the skill by the sheer dint of hard work. Prepare and practice sufficiently, this is the secret of admission essays that achieve the desired result.
